IMPLEMENTING FIRST NATIONS INHERENT RIGHT TO SELF-DETERMINATION

Carried (3 opposed, 0 abstentions)


WHEREAS
our Peoples have entered into historic Nation to Nation Treaties and agreements with the Crown as Nations representative of and accountable to our own Peoples; and 

WHEREAS we as First Nations have the right to self-determination given to us by the Creator, as confirmed by Treaty and recognized by International law; and 

WHEREAS the Crown has repeatedly attempted to colonize our Peoples by trying to control our governments and make them accountable not to our own Peoples, but to the Government of Canada; and 

WHEREAS our first responsibility as First Nations continues to be to our own Peoples, especially to the future generations; and 

WHEREAS we are committed to principles of accountability, transparency and equitable governance in carrying out this responsibility. 

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that First Nations commit to take considered and decisive action to exercise our right to self-determination including a recognition of our rights to lands, waterways and resources in order to serve the needs of our Peoples; and 

FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED that we today give notice of our intention to strengthen and sustain our own systems of governance, to enact and enforce our own laws without interference from federal government and legislative policies and regulations; and 

FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED that we call upon the Government of Canada to fulfill its Treaty and non-Treaty, fiduciary and legal obligations; and 

FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED that the Assembly of First Nations be charged with the responsibility to support the actions of individual First Nations, at their request in exercising our right to self-determination; and 

FINALLY BE IT RESOLVED that as First Nations we remain firmly committed to pursue the implementation of our rights through our own plan and vision in keeping with the responsibilities we have been given by the Creator.
