“What can I do to support the National Day of Action?”

  

1.  General Public

 

  • Write the Prime Minister, the Minister of Indian Affairs Jim Prentice and your local Member of Parliament to tell them you support justice and fairness for First Nations, and that you want the Government of Canada to work in partnership with First Nations to resolve long-standing issues. You can send your comments by e-mail to pm@pm.gc.ca or write the Prime Minister’s office at:

    Remember: you do not need to put a stamp on a letter to the Prime Minister. Letters are delivered for free!

 

  • Show your support for the AFN’s Make Poverty History for First Nations campaign:
    • Sign the online petition on the AFN website (www.afn.ca)
    • Contact the AFN to obtain a wristband that you can wear to show your support for the Make Poverty History for First Nations campaign

 

  • Get information about activities and events for National Aboriginal Day (June 21) and the National Day of Action (June 29) in your area. You can get this information by contacting the AFN and/or your regional AFN office (information is available on the AFN website at www.afn.ca). Then, participate in those activities! Stand with First Nations for a stronger Canada!

 

  • If you are a member of a coalition or public organization, get them involved in National Day of Action activities.

 

  • Organize events in your area to raise awareness and show support a better life for First Nations people.  Your regional AFN office can provide names of speakers and background information for events you may wish to organize.

 

  • Come out and show your support for the National Day of Action on June 29! First Nations are reaching out to all Canadians to show their support in peaceful rallies and marches across the country.

 

 

 

2.  Private Sector:

 

  • Support the AFN’s “Corporate Challenge” aimed at building bridges between First Nations and industry, and increasing opportunities in:
    • Partnerships
    • Investments
    • Procurement
    • Employment

 

Information about the AFN Corporate Challenge is available on the AFN website at www.afn.ca.

 

  • Write or contact the Prime Minister of Canada, the Minister of Indian Affairs and your local Member of Parliament to inform them that you support the call for action to improve the quality of life for First Nations.

 

  • Setup a meeting with an AFN representative (AFN has offices in all regions except Nunavut) to discuss ideas about how the private sector can work with First Nations locally, regionally and nationally in mutually-beneficial, partnership endeavours. Contact information is available on the AFN website at www.afn.ca.

 

  • Read AFN National Chief Phil Fontaine’s speech to the Economic Club, to be delivered in Calgary June 13, for an understanding of the AFN’s views on the important role of business and industry in First Nations’ development.

 

  • Use your industry/organization/trade publication to provide information to your constituents about the National Day of Action on June 29 and the need for justice and fairness for First Nations.

 

  • Organize a forum on First Nations and the economy. Contact the AFN and/or your AFN regional office as they can supply background information and names of speakers. The forum can be anything from a one or two day symposium to a brown bag lunch. It all helps to build better understanding about the way forward.

 

 

3.      Trade Unions

4.  Citizens Coalitions and Public Advocacy Organizations

 

  • Show up and support National Day of Action events and activities in June 29. You can get information about events being planned across Canada on the AFN website at www.afn.ca or the National Day of Action website at (need address). Stand with First Nations for a stronger Canada!

 

  • Distribute information about the National Day of Action across your network of supporters and colleagues. Encourage them to support the National Day of Action and to speak out to the government about the need for justice and action to improve the lives of First Nations people.

 

  • Invite a representative of the AFN to speak at a gathering of your membership. Contact the AFN and/or your AFN regional office to get information and names of speakers.

 

  • Read AFN National Chief Phil Fontaine’s speech to the Canadian Club in Ottawa, delivered May 14, to get an understanding of the current situation and the way forward. The speech is available on the AFN website (in French and English) at www.afn.ca.
