I want to thank everyone who either showed their overwhelming support, or
actively participated, in our National Day of Action on Friday, June 29th. As
you may know, this day called for the recognition and understanding of First
Nations issues, particularly the need to eradicate poverty and address
outstanding land claims, which has caused so much crisis and conflict in our
communities.
The June 29th event, organized by the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) was a huge
success in getting out our message, and Canadians certainly answered our call
for support in urging the federal government to deal with our issues.
I want to congratulate all First Nations leaders across Canada for their hard
work in organizing peaceful events, both big and small in at least 100
communities. I also want to thank our many partners – from corporations, to
unions, to politicians and student groups – who walked with us side-by-side in
order to raise awareness in a positive, productive, and peaceful manner.
The AFN’s working relations with various police forces across Canada as well as
the Red Cross demonstrated our commitment to peacefulness and concern for
ensuring the safety of all Canadians.
The National Day of Action proved that First Nations are united in the fight for
justice and change, and that we have the ability to motivate and mobilize our
people and Canadians.
The events leading up to and including the June 29th National Day of Action
garnered some of the most positive media attention and public support that we
have experienced in recent history. Our messages and stories were carried on
television, radio and in newspapers across Canada, in the U.S., and
internationally, in countries including the UK, Ireland, Russia, Australia,
Taiwan, France, and New Zealand.
Many people are now asking, “What happens next?” Chiefs from across Canada will
meet and discuss the National Day of Action events and decide upon next steps
at our Annual General Assembly in Halifax next week. However, it is clear that
we must continue to reach out and speak to Canadians 365 days a year. First
Nation leaders will continue to ask all Canadians to work with us to eradicate
First Nations poverty, to fight for justice and fairness and to build a country
that lives up to its potential – a truly great Canada.
