OTTAWA, ON – Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief RoseAnne Archibald is in Ottawa today to formally welcome President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden on their first presidential visit north of the medicine line.
National Chief Archibald will be attending both the Address to Parliament in the House of Commons as well as the Official Dinner hosted by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the Shaw Centre.
“I had the pleasure of privately greeting President Biden with a handshake when we attended the state funeral for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II,” said National Chief Archibald. “On this working trip, I am hoping to speak with President Biden about the international status of First Nations Treaties including the Jay Treaty which ensures continued free unencumbered access for First Nations peoples to cross the Canada-United States border.”
“I also ask President Biden to support the MMIWG Calls for Justice to ensure Indigenous women and girls are safe and protected in both Canada and the United States,” concluded National Chief.
Further, AFN welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) and bring together both tribal and federal governments for a long-overdue and long-needed meeting. A joint AFN/NCAI assembly was last held July 1999 in Vancouver.
