National Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo congratulates Sioux Valley Dakota Nation on Self-Government Votes

On behalf of the Assembly of First Nations and the AFN Executive, I offer congratulations to the citizens of Sioux Valley Dakota Nation in your recent successful ratification of historic self-government agreements with the governments of Canada and Manitoba.

These agreements are the result of more than 20 years of negotiations between the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation, the federal government and the Province of Manitoba.  I commend the perseverance, dedication and patience of Sioux Valley Dakota leadership and citizens in fulfilling their vision, affirming their right to self-government and working to regain control over their own social, economic and political development.

I look forward to the speedy ratification of these agreements by Canada and Manitoba, so that you begin the next critical phase of this journey.

First Nation governments across Canada are pursuing their own solutions and finding ways to move forward on their priorities – we stand with you to celebrate your success and to continue to work so that all First Nations can achieve their goals.
