National Chief Atleo Expresses Support and Solidarity for the People and Communities of Japan
March 24, 2011
(Ottawa, ON) – Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo today expressed his support for the people and communities of Japan in response to the growing crisis in the wake of the earthquake, tsunami and consequent nuclear concerns.
“The suggestion was made powerfully to me as a child of a connection to a people from far across the ocean. We enjoyed endless days playing on the sandy shores surrounding our little fishing village on an island off the west coast of Vancouver Island. To our great amusement and wonderment, we would find, amongst the driftwood and other bits thrown ashore by the sea, glass fishing floats from Japanese fishing vessels. ‘These people must be much like us’, I used to think,” said AFN National Chief Shawn Atleo.
“Now, today we are reminded of our connectedness once again, “hishukish-tsawalk”, or everything and everyone is connected in my language. As the tragedy deepens in Japan and as fears of radiation being carried aloft by cross pacific winds reaching my little village begin to be realized, we are reminded that all of humanity, the animals, the plants and all things, share an essential connection and a common future. We extend our hearts in sympathy and compassion and our hands and minds in solidarity with the people of Japan.”
As a new member of the World Future Council, AFN National Chief Shawn Atleo will be adding his name to a statement of support being issued by the World Futures Council on March 28, 2011.
