Assembly of First Nations offers condolences following Samson Cree Nation Fire

October 17, 2012

(Ottawa, ON) – Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo today offered condolences following a house fire in Samson Cree Nation that claimed the lives of three young community members.

“On behalf of the Assembly of First Nations and national executive, and my family, I extend heartfelt condolences to the Swampy, Larocque and Omeasoo families, and to their communities,” said AFN National Chief Shawn Atleo.  “We offer up our prayers and extend our hands in support to the Maskwacîs Cree at this difficult time.  This tragedy underscores the importance of communities coming together to support one another unified in our strength and resilience.”

Chelsea Swampy of Samson Cree Nation, Daniel Larocque of Louis Bull Tribe and Latashia Omeasoo of Ermineskin Cree Nation perished in a house fire the morning of October 14.  Funeral services will be held October 18 for the three best friends, all in their 20s, who were planning a new business venture, and the potential wedding in the near future for Chelsea and Daniel.

While the cause of the fire is unknown at this time, early reports indicate it was accidental.

Samson Cree Nation is located near Edmonton, Alberta.  National Chief Atleo became an honourary member of Samson Cree Nation when he was presented a Headdress by Elders and leaders of the community in 2010.
