August 22, 2012

(Ottawa, ON) – Today, Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo commented on the passing of former Huron-Wendat Nation Chief and Grand Chief Wellie Picard:

“It is with utmost respect that I offer heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Assembly of First Nations, our national executive and, indeed, First Nations across the country to the family and friends of Wellie Picard, and to the council and entire community of Wendake.

First Nations have lost a dedicated and inspiring leader.  As we mourn the passing of Wellie Picard, we reflect on his many contributions to the Huron-Wendat Nation, the First Nations in Quebec and all First Nations who are working to improve the lives of our people and give life to our rights.

Wellie Picard had a long and distinguished political career, after which he continued his work as a respected Elder.  He was a strong, positive influence on the people of Wendake and a strong advocate for the community. His vision and dedicated efforts will carry on through the younger generations he helped lead.

Wellie Picard will be missed by many and remembered dearly for his tireless efforts. He was a true leader and he will be greatly missed and always remembered. We offer our thoughts and prayers to his loved ones and join all our people in honouring his memory and his achievements.”

The Assembly of First Nation is the national organization representing First Nation citizens in Canada.
