August 24, 2012
(Ottawa, ON) – Today, Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo commented on the passing of Chief Fred Glendale from Da'naxda'xw Awaetlala First Nation (BC):
“First Nations people across the country join the citizens of Da'naxda'xw Awaetlala First Nation in mourning the loss of a great man, Chief Fred Glendale. Fred was deeply committed to working for his people and was a dedicated and caring leader.
Chief Glendale diligently worked to exercise and protect First Nation rights, particularly our land rights and fishing rights as Resource Manager for his Nation. He was always dedicated to advancing these causes for his people and worked hard on projects that would bring job opportunities and some financial stability for the future of his Nation. Throughout his career, he sat on a number of Boards and various working groups such as the K Kwakiutl District Council. The Nanwakolas Council, the North Vancouver Island Aboriginal Training Society, the DMT Fisheries Society and the Eulachon committee.
His insight, wisdom, strength and commitment to his people will be greatly missed. Today, our thoughts and prayers go to his family and all those who had the great privilege to know him.”
The Assembly of First Nation is the national organization representing First Nation citizens in Canada.
