National Treaty Forum

Registration Form

The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is convening a National Treaty Forum, March 26 & 27, 2013 at the Dakota Dunes Casino, Whitecap Dakota First Nation, Saskatchewan.   The Forum is open to all Treaty leadership and will provide an opportunity to reflect on recent developments, including the Prime Minister’s commitment on January 11, 2013 to a High Level Mechanism on Treaty Implementation, and determine how to direct next steps.

It is important to note that the High Level Mechanism will establish and mandate a process for Treaty implementation on a Treaty-by-Treaty basis, respecting the Nation-to-Nation relationship between First Nations and the Crown.  This process is intended to generate a shared First Nations and Crown understanding on Treaty Implementation processes only, and not the meaning and substance of Treaty Implementation as only the Treaty Parties can discuss and agree on those matters.

To be clear, the AFN is not a Treaty rights holder: the role of the AFN is strictly to facilitate and support the direct engagement of Treaty holders from all Treaty Nations with the Crown.

A draft agenda and supporting material will be forthcoming.

I look forward to seeing you at this important Forum.

- Regional Chief Perry Bellegarde
