Directions to Victoria Island

 

Walking/Bicycling

 

Going west on Wellington Street you would pass Parliament Hill and turn right onto Portage Bridge. While crossing to Gatineau (Quebec) on the bridge “Aboriginal Experiences” is on your right-hand side – you will see the tipis. Follow the walkway on your right to reach Victoria Island.

 

Driving

 

From downtown Ottawa, take Albert Street west to Booth Street, which is past Bronson Avenue. Turn right on Booth Street towards the Chaudière Bridge, where you will see the Canada War Museum on your left. As you cross the bridge, you will see the sign for “Aboriginal Experiences” on the right-hand side on Middle Street. Turn right onto Middle Street and park in the Navy Club lot on the right. Walk down the road to the very end – under the bridge – to Victoria Island.

Doors open 9:30 p.m. following Wabano’s Igniting the Spirit Gala

 

Gail Obediah of Six Nations will perform “Let the Eagle Fly”, a song she wrote to commemorate the June 11, 2008 Apology.Gail and her band will perform a 45-minute set, followed by a DJ.

 

Tickets: $10 advance or $15 at the door

 

Tickets will be sold at Victoria Island on the morning of June 11th.

Thursday, June 11, 2009

 5:30 a.m.         Sunrise ceremony on Victoria Island

                        Members of the public are welcome to participate or observe.

 

10:30 a.m.         Marchers gather on Victoria Island

 

11:00 a.m.         National Chief and supporters begin march from Victoria Island to Parliament Hill

 

12:15 p.m.         Speeches and Round Dance on Parliament Hill

 

 3:00 p.m.         National Chief Phil Fontaine and leaders of the national Aboriginal organizations meet with the Senate to report on progress made on commitments endorsed by parliamentarians during the year following the government’s apology to former students of Indian Residential Schools.

 

Other events:

 

3 - 5 p.m.          The Indian Residential School Survivors Society of BC (IRSSS) and the National Residential School Survivor Society (NRSSS) are planning an event to honour the commissioners of the Indian Residential Schools Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
