AFN Youth Council

Special Chiefs Assembly report – December 2008

Key Issues and Activities

The Assembly of First Nations National Youth Council continues to work towards reaching the goals set forth in the Action Plan developed as a result of the National Youth Summit held in late 2007. The action plan was endorsed by the Chiefs-in-Assembly in July. The Council has examined how to promote this plan and worked with members of the AFN Communications team on an effective communication strategy. A work plan for the upcoming year is being developed by Council members and will be shared with the entire Council during their upcoming annual winter meeting that precedes the Special Chiefs Assembly.

Along with the work related to the action plan, the Council has worked to increase its visibility nationally. Council members have been asked to appear and speak at several events held across the country. These members have represented the Council and the AFN in a respectful and dignified manner and have showcased the many significant qualities of our First Nation youth. Some of these events include the Walk for Life rally held in Ottawa, the Apathy is Boring forum held in Halifax, election-related events and the National Environment and Water Forum in Yellowknife. The Council has also been asked to speak to relevant issues facing youth such as the growing epidemic of youth suicide. Lastly, the Council continues to bring a voice for First Nation youth to the AFN Executive and other committee meetings.
